What are the chances that the new "media device" that seems so certain on sept. 12 will be the iPhone? It would be nice to at least see this by MWSF in Jan. (also happens to be around the time my 2yr contract is up ;) )

I had the old Shuffle and it was amazing, Then I sold it and got a 30 gig ipod video, which I hardly ever use to listen to music. I'm getting the new Shuffle, for sure...

Agreed. We would gladly pay $300 a license to upgrade each of our current FCP seats to 64bit and not have to interrupt our pipeline.

OK Affirmed now you make a more sensible argument. So you are upset that Apple changed the paradigm and f---ed your work flow and pocketbook?

Apple is not microsoft or avid and not so much into supporting the status quo - I imagine you know that. So perhaps you should just lick your wounds and file this under "to be expected." Or perhaps Final Cut X will surprise you by fitting better than you thought into your existing pipeline and return to you, in a short time, the amount of money you have to invest to implement it.

..but still considering switching to AVID full-time for the known reliability factor...Not to scare you but reliability and Avid MC in certain aspects dont go together. Ive been on Avid MC since 2001 and can tell you that some days its a roll of a dice :P
One tip, dont upgrade till youve read all the gripes on the Avid forum site. Which is sometimes months after initial update is deployed.
Oh and yearly support means you have someone to call and bitch but dont expect your problem to be fixed quickly (sometimes never :P).
Now since Im the end user and dont have to pay a dime, im good.
But I ran my own shop and had to deal with support costs and yearly justifications (my dollar of course), then I welcome anything anyone has to offer at $299 USD (or $285 Canadian) ;)

To the English fellows... am I right in thinking the match is sold out? And is the country showing interest?

It's Ashes fever to be honest and the test has replaced our hopeless national football team on the back pages. People have been buying tickets on ebay for 500 a pop! Getting emails from the most unlikely people on it too. Could do for cricket what our World Cup Rugby win did for that sport, if we were to win of course ;)

Good luck to both sides though, it's a hell of a series and I cannot believe Warne's bowling. He's well on course to completely smash his 1993 wicket haul.

Also, Just been told to turn my radio off at work :( guess it's score card reliance then....

Great post. Just one thing (or maybe 2?)

I never said I didn't like what Apple has done or that the technology isn't great.

What I was stating is that Apple, along with other companies contribute to the dumbing down of society. And then put themselves in a position to speak down to you (ie today's quote by Steve Jobs) about educating the customer.

I don't pretend to have all the answers. One of my majors was in Speech Communications. There's a lot of validity to professionals using language to subjugate and/or exclude other members of society in conversation. The language doctors, lawyers, auto mechanics, you name it all have their own vocabulary which excludes the average person. This also adds "mystique" and credence to the information they state.

So when I say that Apple and other companies are contributing to the dumbing down of society - I say that without prejudice or judgment - but merely a statement of fact. And pretty incontrovertible at that.

Okay, so how would you tell the average person to check their carburetor without "excluding the average person?"

Yes, there's plenty of examples of language usage designed to add mystique. Heck, one popularly misunderstood one in tech circles is the word "free" since "free" to the average person is different than "free" to the FSF/GNU crowd.

Heck, your opinion that Apple "contributes to the dumbing down of society" is an example of talking down against what people do. I personally don't see them as "dumbing down society", since I see that society was dumb to begin with. Apple doesn't make us any dumber, because if Apple didn't make the devices easy to use, people probably wouldn't use the devices anyways. They wern't going to be "smarter" without it.

Likewise, all are welcome to see both our wordings as language manipulation.

Sometimes the language gap is unavoidable because for some given unique thing, there's just no reasonable alternative. The average person simply does not need to know what a carburetor is, does not want to know what a carburetor is, nor would even care to remember what a carburetor is if you took the time to explain it to them in clear words.

Likewise, I'm fairly sure many of you here would care all that much if I or somebody else busted out a lecture on the Tomasulo algorithm despite all of us using it every day.

I'm all for education, but I understand that sometimes people just want to use the device, not know about how it works. Giving people the tools to do what they want lets them choose what they do next, hopefully that is to learn about something they do actually care about.

You just had to bring up the Rugby World Cup, didn't you? We were robbed! Robbed, I tell you!!

And you've been told to turn your radio off? Call him un-English. That's an Australian thing that politicians use whenever people don't agree with them "To disagree would be un-Australian". Our Prime Minister is the top candidate of this phrase.

And Warne is doing very well but I still think he is a wanker.

Yikes. With those sales numbers, how do they stay in business?

keep in mind it's only a small 350.000 population market

i have no idea though ... it is even more funny because i actually know the person who registered that new Chrysler Voyager (he is using for his business).
if you are interested i can easily post the rest of the numbers

    Nice one.

Of course, we already knew, but it's good to see confirmation and know that there will be some indie content on there. My bet: October, and definitely alongside a new video iPod.

EDIT: As opposed to a new iPod nano.

This entire scenario is playing out like Windows / MacOS part 2 -- the vertically integrated MacOS (hardware + OS coming from same source) is beaten into obscurity by the OS that is available on a multitude of devices from many different manufacturers.

Every percentage point that Android ticks higher -- every million more Android customers that sign on due to BOGOs and heavily subsidized phones -- makes their customer base the more enticing one to develop for.

This type of competition won't keep Apple "honest and innovative" -- it'll just lead to what we saw before in the 80s and 90s: top software going to the competing platform with Apple grabbing at scraps.

True... In theory. The difference this time around is that despite the larger, and growing, market share study after study has shown that statistically, android users dont buy apps and iOS users buy lots of apps. So the reality is there is a slightly larger market share where developers don't make squat, and a slightly smaller market share where developers have already earned over 2 billion dollars

[Macworld reports (http://www.macworld.com/2006/11/firstlooks/rosetta/index.php) that based on their benchmarks, Apple's Rosetta PowerPC emulation technology for Intel Macs...
    Please...

"Rosetta" is Apple's cute marketing name for their rebranding of Transitive's "QuickTransit" technology".

    http://www.transitive.com/

So, of course, Apple and Transitive engineers have been working together to improve the performance.

But, please, don't call it "Apple's technology" unless you say "technology that Apple is licensing". Lots of interesting stuff comes from outside 10700 N. De Anza Blvd, Cupertino, CA (the real address for 1 Infinite Drive). Which, btw, I've only driven by 3 times this week...

    Hell yes!!!

With a better mobile graphics GPU, i.e.,
ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 Series or
    GeForce Go 7900

    Larger optional hard drives:
offer the Seagate ST9160821A-RK 160 GB ATA-100 for mac laptops or Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160 GB

and here is the kicker: (optional)
    Blu-Ray Drive player/burner, with DVD+-R (dl) ability.

hey i know it would cost more, but apple is supposed to lead in terms of technology.

Getting a little ahead of ourselves on the GPU?? How about Apple clocking the X1600 at ATI's default speed, first.;)

I wonder, in this process, how many FTE are going to be dedicated to receiving and aggregating this dayda. Or if the app development itself signaled the end like has been mentioned. I'd be nice to receive something as a followup; maybe a post card from ATT.
