I have a few 5870/5770 lying around here so Ill eventually try it.

The time has once again come for my city's streeets to be clogged with confused geeks sporting their flashy exhibitor passes and jamming the exotic services on craigslist. Oh the joy of MWSF.

I will be there right after I get done "reading" the keynote address.

that looks like a laptop, and indeed this seems to be better suited for a laptop not an Ipod

for those who call me a constant naysayer,

Apple has also added a 750GB hard disk for the Mac Pro for $399.00 and the 500GB now sells for $199.00 in bay 1. For bays 2 - 4 the prices are $599 and $399.

Does the Mac Pro firmware update solves the issue with the Mac Pro + x1900XT + ACD 23" with Bootcamp?

    Frederic

I doubt it, but why don't you install the update and then let us know?

I installed this the first day it was out and have seen no problems. I seem to be running around 3 degrees celsius cooler, and openoffice (uses x11) is working properly again.

    Not bad. :)

It looks pretty nice. The clip feature is definitely handy to have, especially with something that small in size.

However as nice as it is, if I had the choice right now between the 2, I would buy the old iPod Shuffle instead. Not just because I like the look of the old one better, but also the size and ability to use it as a flash drive.

Running tri-channel @ 1600mhz (2gb x3). Have -smp 11 flag. Task manager shows 90-93% like it should while all the cores are at 100%.

Haven't downloaded the new client yet as I didn't know a new one got released. Will do that tomorrow when I get some time.

let us know how it does with the new client. also, make note of which work unit that you are folding, as stated before the 2684's are tough units.

Coincidentally, Newegg just launched a shell shocker for a 8GB (2 x 4GB) kit of Corsair RAM for $69.99 free shipping. Corsair is one of the major brands along with Kingston, Crucial, etc. There seem to be a few negative reviews for dead sticks on this particular product, however the RAM comes with plenty of warranties (30-day Newegg and Lifetime Corsair), so it should be fine to take the deal and just run Memtest for a while once you install it to make sure you didn't get any defective sticks.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233081

This deal will only last for a few more hours, then it's up (10am PST).

Corsair gave me problems, had to return. Bought it at newegg.

What would that have to do with the group of people who buy Mac Pros? They're not business people. They're primarily photographers and video people.

"What the shareholders use" is possibly the most irrelevant point raised in this thread.

Also, as has been pointed out, the iMacs are not that overpriced; especially given the cost of 27" IPS displays.

That said, people have always assumed  cinema displays to be more overpriced than they actually were, if only because they weren't making like-for-like comparisons. It's less true now that LCD prices have been adjusted downwards after the price-fixing scandal, but a Dell 27" IPS display is still pretty expensive.

I'm not saying that  doesn't have high prices - they do - but very frequently, people are not making a like-for-like comparison. Most notably in screens. I don't know of any iPad competitors that use IPS displays, and make no mistake: IPS displays are more expensive than the competition. Most people also don't care about display technology, but it matters to people in the photo/video field.

All that matter is GROSS MARGINS on the financial reports. Apple's gross margins far exceed dell or hp's gross margins. HENCE, apple is making more profit for any piece of equipment they sell. The prices could be lower, but they are going to charge higher because they can charge higher, and people will still buy them. I wonder how many people here really can read a financial statement from a corporation. The answers are there, not in component costs. It is basic business to any MBA.

I think this is the #1 reason people don't switch; They think that the difficulties of windows are how computing is supposed to be, namely, complicated, expensive, and time consuming.

I have to fight tooth and nail at my company to use a mac because, and I quote my "IT Professional"; "Macs are too expensive, they get too many viruses, and they're too hard to network and support". Now, granted, this woman isn't bright and was "promoted" to network admin from some receptionist job at some point, but this is how most companies think.

I have to disagree. I really don't think it is that sophisticated of an issue. It comes down to software and deployment. The people on this board are quite intelligent, so I would expect they can concede Windows rules the software market.

I am the network admin, on the side, for a small business. Additionally, I am the purchasing manager, and as the purchasing manager it is not prudent for me to purchase any Macs. Windows 2003 SBS (small business server) is an excellent backend server. Remote access, VPN, and exchange server simply are amazing tools for collaboration and connectivity to peers. On SBS 2003 they are all included.

The computers I purchase must have Windows XP Pro, which is a must for our domain management. I have actually added a Mac to our active directory, and had Entourage running off Exchange, and I can tell you it was a big pain in the ass. HP Business Computers are excellent at providing a clean install of Windows XP Pro. I simply don't see a decent argument for an employee to have a Mac when all the programs they are required to run are on Windows. Additionally, I will not waste time or money purchasing additional licenses of XP Pro for Macs, and then have to install it. Since we are a construction company we are heavy into Timberline (SQL based estimating and accounting...amazing application), Access, Visio, Project, and AutoCAD. I have yet to find viable alternatives on the Mac that has full compatibility.

In your argument you mentioned iTunes. Well I have that for Windows. I find Picasa to be a better application than iLife, and I don’t use Garage Band or iMovie.

Of course for home use there are plenty of software choices that are arguably the best in their class, such as iLife. However, those specific applications are not significant value added tools for our business.

The truth is I own a Mac at home for simple entertainment. It’s fun to use a different platform from time to time. However, Ubuntu and OS X are still entertainment OSs for me and not much more.

However, when money is on the line I would never choose a Mac in our business. They simply don’t have a competitive advantage and are not able to offer any software that would make our business more efficient. Now I could argue that software developers can be blamed for not offering Mac versions of critical applications, but I really don’t care.

Who said anything about a Muslim state? Please don't spin the topic.

It's just despicable really. What's more sad is people who go out of their way to justify and defend this, without fully even knowing what it is they're justifying and defending.

A muslim state is what israel would become if all the palestinians were given citizenship, and that simply can't happen, it would be very dangerous. I do know what i'm defending, the right for israel not to become an arab country. You can say the jewish majority there is artificial, but so was the christian population in north america a couple hundred years ago, they also brought boat loads of settlers from around the world, look how that turned out.

twoodcc may I ask if any of your setups have gone down?

Output of the team has gone down lately :(

My 24 hour average dropped in half but I'm back running. Next week or two will be off/on for me as I've been moving my stuff but once I finish my bathroom I'll be moved into my house and will be folding away non stop. I'm up to around 90-100k right now so hopefully that'll jump start things some more.

itunes 7 looks like a promising upgrade. I like how each type of media will have its own library. syncing with the ipod should be better now.

Bah. I can't even be bothered to read to the end of the thread about this nonsense. What's next, a press release announcing the danger of not securing your iPod headphones? Just think, if someone held on to the end of your headphone cable they could use it to follow you from several feet away EVEN IN THE DARK

I hope this is true. I hate Cingular. Crappy service.
If iPhone comes is either Apple has their own service, or iPhone will be available for all carriers.
I was so scary by the original rumor that Cingular had the exclusivity for the iPhone. Glad is not the case anymore.

The speed of my internet connection has been brought up a couple times, I have a T1 connection and plenty of bandwidth.

If you have a T1 connection, you do NOT have plenty of bandwidth. In fact, in today's world you have approximately none.

    T1 is 1.5mbit/sec.

On my home Internet connection (Cox cable) I have 30mbit/sec down and 5mbit/sec up.

T1 will probably support one user at a time, and that user will find it slow.

You need to make sure you have symmetrical bandwidth, since you are running a server. If you have a T1, you probably do, but, like I said, it's a snail.

If you can't get more bandwidth at a reasonable price in your location, consider co-locating your server at a data center. It will almost certainly be cheaper than bringing the bandwidth into your building.

Others have suggested that perhaps you meant "tier 1":
