Reminds me of the OpenLabs keyboard workstations. They introduced this concept a few years ago. Awesome idea that still hasn't really caught on yet. I'd love it but I can't envision mass market appeal. Still cool to see.

It costs right around $1 per magazine to print, design and mail for very large circulations. Magazine not newspaper. Take out the printing and mailing and you're probably looking at about $.75 costs. Sell it for $.99 on the ITMS and Apple takes $.33 and they lose money. Magazines have very little wiggle room price wise.

Assuming that your numbers are correct, then why not charge $2.49/issue - 75 cents to Apple (30%) = $1.74 back to the publisher. They cover their cost and make some money. But $4.99 per issue? If magazine publishers have existed and profited all these years there is no reason why they cannot apply the same pricing ratios to a digital format at a reduced cost (to compensate for the lack of physical printing costs). Charge a higher rate for individual issues and a reduced rate for subscriptions. The key is for them to keep it simple and not try to reinvent the wheel in terms of design/delivery. A simple .pdf style without a bunch of embedded bells and whistles seems like it would make the most sense. I can't imagine it would take that much time/money to produce digital versions so long as you're not embedding interactive froo froo crapola.

I still dont get why I would want to use my iPad to read when my laptop is sitting right next to me and is a lot more comfortable to use and not much bigger (13 MBA).

On your couch at home perhaps, but how about on the train? Or on the bus? In a car? A Plane? Doctor's office? Waiting room at the mechanic? Should I keep going or

How nice of you, now can you maybe please tell us who have Pro how to download it?
Yes. I'd be very interested in seeing how his version of Pro allows you to download streams, whereas mine doesn't.

I thought it was supposed to be easier to use and one didn't have to be a pro to use it.

It does look easier to use, but it has a tremendous amount of detailed functionality and there will be a learning curve to learn how to use it all, just as there's a learning curve to know how to use all the functionality of Photoshop or Illustrator.

IMO, this is not an app for the average Joe who wants to edit some bad footage of their dog or kid or goes to a concert and shoots shaky footage with distorted audio that they want to send to YouTube. Those people will stick with iMovie.

The problem for pros - those who edit high production value TV shows, features and spots - is that if there's just one pro need that's missing or badly implemented, then it most likely can't be used at all, no matter how great the balance of the product is. It remains to be seen whether that's the case or not.

From my perspective NOT working as a pro on a major show, it looks pretty spectacular. And for $299, it's remarkable - it could be perceived by the competition as predatory pricing. (It will cost me more than $299 to buy an effects plug-in package for Photoshop that I want to use for still photography.) But I actually think that price point will cause some pros not to use it regardless of its merits because it will be perceived as not being a pro application. And I wonder whether Apple priced it that low because it's missing some key functionalities necessary for pro use and therefore they won't even consider it in the same class as Avid.

As for the implication from other posters that the demo was presented to "fanboys" and not a pro audience, this was presented at the NAB show, which is most definitely a pro audience. But remember that the people most likely to show up are those who were already using current versions of FCP. But having said that, a few years ago at the Audio Engineering Society convention, I watched an Avid demo with the guys who mixed "24", which was also incredibly impressive. What they (and other major show/feature editors) would think about this product, I don't know.

But I don't want to give the impression that I'm negative. This looks like an incredible product that Apple gave a lot of thought (and resources) to for an incredibly low price. I also had fears based on the previous hype that Apple was going to simplify the product so much that it would have become useless for pros (or any serious use), but that absolutely does not seem to be the case.

I've been reading through this thread and noticed how nearly everyone is focused on Apple entering the "cell phone" market. I can't believe how the majority of you actually feel that Apple will make a cell phone? And you're all going to ditch your RAZR when it comes out...

Apple is not going to, and will never, enter the cell phone market. They are designing a WiFi phone to compete with the new VoIP phones that are emerging: http://tools.netgear.com/skype/, http://news.zdnet.co.uk/communications/wireless/0,39020348,39187936,00.htm. Does the name "iChat Mobile" making anymore sense now?

You can quote me on that!

Doubtful those numbers are accurate, willing to bet it's more a marketing stunt at this point considering they could price it much higher and sell all this years units without a problem.. With potential profits like this, it's only a matter of time before GM heads down the wrong road, again. Makes no sense really.

My brother just called and said they were getting a Kinect system for their Christmas. He said their daughter just bought one and had them over to look at it, and the mom (now 62?) was sold on the spot. I have not been "into" gaming for quite a few years but may have to go try it out!

Just matching CPU speeds is like comparing Fords and Porsches based on horsepower ratings. If a person who wants a fast car can't see the value in a Porsche then by all means get a Ford.
If each computer used a custom CPU, then your comparison would have merit. But we're talking about computer vendors that use identical CPU's from Intel.
Has anyone looked at where their Mac Pro is "assembled"? The one I bought last year is "assembled in USA". I don't know what factor labor costs in putting these together, but I'm sure it's more than China.
All the MP's are made in China (Hon Hai Precision, aka Foxconn, is the ODM supplier to Apple for the MP - the actual production and assembly work is done in Shenzen, though the company is headquartered in Taiwan).

The final assembly for a CTO would be done in the USA for an order meant to be delivered in North America. For Europe, it's done in Ireland.
it should be noted that the Dell price includes a discount , which apple never seems to do.
Dell, HP and other PC vendors are willing to use discounts and/or incentives to help move systems, and I've even gotten better pricing over the phone than the web site on numerous occasions over the years.

So picking up the phone would be a good idea IMO.

This is a huge nothing issue and the press is making a big deal about it because they are all libs and they hate corporations. They will do anything to make them look evil and out to get everyone. They also like to down success in any way possible.

I have 2 iPhones, 2 iPods, 1 iPad and 2 MacBook Pros they can track until their hearts content if they want. I'd also like to track them myself so I'll keep those services turned on!

I'd like to note that i know that Apple does not gather the tracking information. I am just saying if they wanted to they can, I don't care.

Wow, this is so incredibly ignorant I can't even believe it. They can track me wherever I go, I don't care, they can grab my genitals at airports, I don't care, they can take all my money for bailouts of private banks, I don't care, they can abandon democracy, so what? I have a white iPhone, I'm the coolest!

Face it, corporations do evil/ unethical things all the time, denying this is nothing but ignorance.

But Steve says it's fine, he always speaks the truth since he's a rich billionaire ceo.

    http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/04/29/jon-stewart-on-the-lost-next-generation-iphone/)

Jon Stewart, host of the comedy news show The Daily Show, offered an extended segment (http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-april-28-2010/appholes) on yesterday's show addressing the ongoing saga of the lost next-generation iPhone (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/04/27/criminal-investigation-of-lost-next-generation-iphone-spurred-by-apple-requests/) that was acquired by Gizmodo. The clip has been receiving a fair bit of attention today due to the show's popularity and Stewart's angle on the story taking Apple to task for its role in events.

Stewart's monologue, which kicked off the show, highlights many of the key events in the story thus far and sees Stewart professing his love for Apple gadgets but directly addressing Apple CEO Steve Jobs with his fears that Apple is becoming "The Man" in a reversal of the company's landmark '1984' commercial that introduced the Macintosh. Stewart draws a comparison to the reclusive Howard Hughes, suggesting that Jobs could be heading down the same road with the "paranoid corporate genius stuff" that saw Hughes engage in increasingly bizarre behavior. And unsurprisingly, Stewart also takes the opportunity to deliver a rant at AT&T's service, a popular target of discontent for iPhone owners.

He is the one who tried to kill her.

I'm not convinced he was trying to kill her.

I'm absolutely certain that he was trying to (at least) annoy her, or (at worst) scare the bejeebus out of her.

Under the circumstances, if he was really trying to kill her, I think he would have succeeded.

Johnny Cheung Lee is a badboy. His Wii Remote work was simply awesome; head tracking, creating your own digital whiteboard for next to nothing etc.

He was snapped up by Microsoft - and subsequently it would appear Google - and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he was on the dev team for Kinect.

If these guys have half the talent Lee does Apple should hire them today.

    Check him out: http://johnnylee.net/

Listen, here is how you get the stream to work. Go to your quicktime preferences and turn the Conenction speed onto automatic or say a 128 conenction, it will cough up a nicely watchable lower grade version of the stream which streams nicely. If you say 1.5 mb/sec Lan then it tries to stream to you the higher res version which stutters. And BTW. It is up to Akamai, apples bandwidth distributer to cough up more bandwidth.

    Good luck peoples.

I really don't understand these programs where people smash up things for fun.
There's a program on Discovery as well which does these things.
Don't get it,just can not do that in this era anymore because its just wasting resources for nothing.
Here in Europe You won't find such utterly stupid programs.

I think that for the first 24 hours that a new event video is up it should be for Mac users only. Maybe even require QuickTime Pro.

Either that or just get better servers and/or use bittorrent.
