Small Pelican case for my Oakley Glasses, (as seen on the last page of the XIV Purchases Thread)

Have room for another pair too, Maybe I'll find another pair that I like in the future.

there is a destinct difference between 'sharing' and 'synching'.

Exactly! Now maybe you see my first point.

And, your "solution" to fingerprinting libs could, very well I believe, impact this other distinct feature.

It makes no sense to "share" from an iPod (or to one for that matter) - costs are too high as pointed out ad nauseum (see above posts yet to be refuted).

Making it an iPod w/ AirTunes would cannibalize sales of ATEs and also - again - be too expensive from a power standpoint unless you tether your iPod to a charger defeating one of the great bonus points of wireless. Or get a dock for the TV - oh wait, you've again made the "wireless" not so wireless - and redundant...

In fact - that comparison is a little early. Make the same one in 5 years.

I am wondering how the comparison for the XBox vs. Playstation vs. others looked like some days after the initial start.

Leopard requires 9GB, Snow Leopard requires 5GB, and now Lion is under 4GB?

Oh my, no. That's just the size of the installer, which is compressed. Right now on the partition that I'm pretty sure that I only have the OS installed on and little to nothing else, I have 6.55gb taken up. The final version might take up even less than that.

The reason Lion's only 3.7 GB right now is because it's an upgrade only. You can't install Lion on a clean partition right now, only upgrade from Snow Leopard.

Apple likely did this to reduce download times.

It's really obvious from the very beginning despite what "news unfolds", is that we will be obliterating Quadafi's army killing any leadership that makes a difference where we can. It was never a "protect the innocent ppl weilding AK-47's and RPG's in defenseless pickup trucks" mission.

The best bet Quadafi has is what was done in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hide (including "important ppl" supporting the current gov), and wage asymetric warfare in the cities and destabilize the new government until "Western forces" call it quits. Which I think the news at one point mentioned that this is what Quadafi vowed too. He will hope to draw "western advisors" into the ground battle and try to kill them because this will make westerners, namely the American ppl sour and create "arab resentment" which if it works, bring others into his cause against the infidels and the usual rhetoric. If the French bring in ground "advisors" too, that would be great because French citizens believe Frenchman are too good to die any other way than while eating wine and cheeze during sex...with multiple partners.

Otherwise, this will just be another "boring paragraph" in the history books. Not too many ppl give a crap about this "war". Just search youtube and Lybia clips has such small hits while Japan ones have like a gazillion. No one gives a crap...unless our "poor 18 year old boys start dying". This is what Quadafi must do because he can't win on a head on battle. No way.

yes, this is true. but apple is not in the business to sell more computers. apple is in the business to turn profits.

tiffany's would sell more diamond rings if they cut the price in half.
BMW would sell more cars if they cut the price by 30%.

    ...but so what?

Exactly. Apple will stay in business as long as it's profitable; it's that simple.

It doesn't bother me that Apple has low single-digit marketshare and it doesn't necessarily bother Apple as long as they continue to make money.

And I don't know if a $500 - $600 loss leader Mac would guarantee an increase in desktop marketshare. (This is different to me than the loss leader that ITMS is). The only effect it would have would be to decrease profits.

Hi, my name is Joe and I'm sitting in front of a 30" ACD and I have a 22" ACD beside me. And I'm typing this from home.

I would rather see Apple lower the price of the 20" and keep all of their displays at 20" and higher.

I think the number or cores will finally level off for a while once 8 core machines
become mainstream.Mainstream? I doubt any 8+ core users will be mainstream outside of commercial use.The next goal will be production refinements like 45 nm production for greater energy efficiency.I'll be surprised if that won't lead to a 16-core offering about a year from now or next winter 2008 at the latest. We are about to go from 4 to 8 in little over a year and a half to begin with. So I would guestimate the graduation from 8 to 16 will be in less time than it was from 4 to 8. So i would say that would not be a leveling off.Software developers will need to re-train or hire new software engineers who know how to take advantage of multi-core architecture.Well I'm still into the idea that multi-tasking can be just as big a driver of the need for more cores as multi-threaded within each. So I'm not sure we need to wait for software developers to "catch up". I know I'm not alone when I say I could use 16 cores in a Mac Pro right now with the existing base of software that already exists. The big question for those who must have the newest, most powerful system will be how much RAM they'll need to take advantage of the new architecture.I know that the primary applications I could use all this power for do not use much ram at all. So this specification may vary a lot among users. There are quite a few audio/video production professionals wondering how all this
will help to improve their workflow capabilties.Wondering? I'm pretty sure most are not wondering - more like eagerly anticipating due to KNOWING it will improve workflow tremendously.

Gah. The Linux community doesn't want to unify. In fact, not unifying is the core of their philosophy.

You do realize that you are full of crap? There is acautlly quite a bit work being done in order to unify various areas of Linux.

It's why there are 415 distributions (none of which are compatible with each other)

Again: you do realize that you are full of crap? There are handful of distributions that matter, rest are more or lesss niche. The ones that matter are (IMO): Fedora/Red Hat, SUSE, Ubuntu, Debian and Gentoo. Of those, Ubuntu and Debian are quite compatible with each other.

9,843 window managers (none of which have remotely similar configuration options), and 3.43x10^15 terminal emulators (none of which actually emulate terminals any better or worse than any other one).

Maybe they realized that "one size does NOT fit all"? Why should there be just WM, just one editor, just one browser, just one email-client etc. etc.?

Yes, Linux has several options to choose from. And is that a bad thing? Is it a good thing to cram some specific thing down users throatts without gicing them the option to choose? It has two primary GUI's (with several smaller ones floating around as well): GNOME and KDE. And while they are both GUI's, they are both sufficiently different that they do not overlap as much. They have different architecture behind them, different design-goals, different ideology... And they cater to different types of users. I have used both, and I can appreciate the strengths of either of them.

Intel has had years developing graphics as well. That statement by itself really doesn't say anything.

Functionality wins over a supposed performance edge? Your whole argument is based on how Llano is supposedly going to be faster than Sandy Bridge. You have yet to state any OpenCL applications that you are using or plan on using in the future yet suddenly you need it NOW because you saw some AMD propaganda video on their YouTube channel. The fact of the matter is, Llano has a VERY slim chance of coming to Macs so it's high time you get over that video and just enjoy Sandy Bridge if you are only buying computers from Apple. If you really needed that extra power then you wouldn't be buying a machine with only an IGP to begin with.

What history? Developing crappy integrated graphics?

I missed writing "SMALL performance edge".

My assessment is not based on a small performance edge. It is based on Fusion enabling a whole new set of functionality thanks to OpenCL and DirectX 11 class hardware.

I established my preference BEFORE watching that video. That Sandy Bridge performs so poor in that demo just confirms my choice.

Just because 256 is 'perfect' for you does not mean it is perfect for everyone else. I need 500GB SSD. External drive solutions are just way to slow compared to internal SSD. The SSD upgrade on my Laptop was the best upgrade ever, now I want an 27'' iMac with 500GB SSD and lots of memory.

500GB of SSM ? Holey Moley Daddy Warbucks.

PS: you should check out the new PCI SSD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227581), when they start making external PCI enclosures for "ThunderCat"...youll be golden buddy:)

While I know how to drive a car with a manual shifter, here's a BIG problem nowadays: the quality of the shifter has really gone downhill in recent years. http://www.en.kolobok.us/smiles/big_standart/negative.gif

Unless you're driving a BMW, Honda or Porsche, gear shifters on modern cars either are too "notchy" or overly-vague in terms of finding a gear, and the result is not very pleasant, especially in city driving.

Besides, automatics and dual-clutch gearboxes--thanks to modern computer controls--have gotten really good in recent years. This is especially true with automatics that sport six to eight forward gears, which allows for a lot smoother automatic shifts between gears during acceleration. I've test-driven a 2011 US-market Hyundai Elantra saloon with Hyundai's own six-speed automatic and note how smooth the shifts are even during hard acceleration.

Yeah, because we all know how lovely AMD's desktop processors have been. Let alone their mobile processors. The only thing they have going for them is their price. If you want a better processor, buy Sandy Bridge. If you want a better GPU, buy Llano. Stop with your unreleased AMD propaganda.

AMD Fusion is a better CPU because it does true OpenCL in the GPU, not like Intel's alpha OpenCL which runs on the CPU side.

Fusion is DirectX 11 class. Intel is DirectX 10.1 class.

And we have a right to try to stop them killing each other?

    No.

No, but we were asked to help out. We aren't sticking our noses into a mess we are not welcome in.

As long as we are not sending ground troops in, I support it. Right now, the Air Force and Navy are capable of bombing runs. They'll probably send in B-2's and F-22's for the initial strike to get rid of the anti-aircraft systems since they are stealth planes and then probably turn most of the enforcement of the no-fly zone over to the Europeans.

Because there is not enough of it, and it will increase our need of foreign oil not lessen it.

There is twice as much gasoline refined from a barrel of sweet crude than diesel.

Diesel has the advantage of longer carbon chains which represents more power per volume than gasoline. On a joule level gas engines are on par.

But because of the greater energy difference, this is important for use in commercial engines that are meant to tow or carry tremendous amounts of weight, like trucks and ships. But especially trucks. This allows engines to be significantly smaller for the weight that they have to carry than diesel.

For a long time, and in many places people that drove diesel vehicles did so because of the tax advantages. The taxes were kept lower in order to make commercial usage cheaper.

It is not greener to go diesel. It takes that resource from other parts of the economy and puts it into cars. Cars do just fine with gasoline. They are relatively clean and there is twice as much of the stuff in a gallon of oil. They don't get better mileage except in volume of stuff. Which is not the correct measurement. If cars became more diesel, then diesel would become dramatically more expensive, affecting the overall livelihood of everyone, dramatically increase the cost of oil and bring about energy devastation much faster than anyone could imagine.

By moving to hybrids and electrics, we actually decrease our dependence on foreign oil, and make our cars greener per mile driven. This is why it is the answer and diesel isn't.

Which is exactly why the past few weeks have been a great time to load up on Apple stock. Apple has been increasing computer sales with transitional computers. The "real" machines aren't out yet.

In other words, Apple growth won't be slowing down any time soon. In fact, it should probably accelerate over the next 12 months.

When the "real" machines are out, Vista will be out as well. Unless Leopard has revolutionary improvements, the difference between Windows and OSX+iLife would be much less than that it is today. I would still appreciate the UNIX under the hood, but I doubt most consumers care. If Mac sales or market share starts to come down a bit due to fewer switchers, the share price could easily crash.

    Contrast that ad to this...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxZ6NQnIPkU

... and the message Apple is sending becomes very clear.

Isn't that a Verizon ad, not a Mototrola one?

People keep whining about the "Droid" commercials but that is Verizon's branding and line and has nothing to do with the manufacturers. Look at this Droid Incredible commercial by HTC (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNz1qfJc9z4U) (this one too (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZkcODD6Zaw)) and then see what Verizon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwzKFDkb0MI) did to it.
